Dynamic Agroforestry – Mollesnejta

On the slopes of Cerro Tunari lies the Experimental Station Mollesnejta, a 16 hectare parcel of land dedicated to the research and experimentation of dynamic agroforestry systems. At Mollesnejta, agroforestry and land regeneration practices are guided by awareness and respect of the complex interactions between soil, plants, animals, and humans.

It is with this vision and the help of fellow researchers, practitioners, and nature lovers that Dr. Noemi Stadler-Kaulich transformed Mollesnejta from a degraded, over grazed parcel of land into a rich, dynamic and biodiverse ecosystem. Since Dr. Noemi acquired the property in 2000, she and others have planted over 41,000 plants. Mollesnejta is now home to over 480 species, 205 of which have regenerated naturally.

Internship Description:

Mollesnejta requires much effort and work throughout the year. Thus it offers practical internships in the following areas:

  1. Planting following principles of dynamic agroforestry
  2. Management of experimental plots (e.g. complementary planting, selective pruning, selective weeding, incorporation of organic matter, etc.)
  3. Planting seedlings in the nursery
  4. Learning about trees and their characteristics and benefits
  5. Production of compost (using several techniques, including activated carbon)
  6. Daily care of animals (llamas, donkeys, geese, chickens, bees) and the observation of their behavior in agroforestry systems
  7. Maintenance of water supply and storage networks (using keyline design)
  8. Promoting the success of Mollesnejta and its projects through social media and crowd funding

Intern requirements:

  1. Interest in agro-ecological food production systems
  2. Openness to learning an innovative agroforestry technique that breaks the mold of conventional production
  3. Good physical condition because the tasks in the field are physically demanding
  4. Basic knowledge of the Spanish language (Noemi Stadler-Kaulich speaks German, French, English and Spanish)
